Fresh produce just got more affordable for low-income families.

Millvale Market at 524 Grant Ave. now accepts EBT/SNAP benefits.

There are approximately 3,800 residents of Millvale, which received a designation of low/moderate income in a recent census. On Jan. 29, after more than two decades without a grocer, the borough celebrated the opening of the 1,600-square-foot market. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Eligible foods for benefits include dairy, produce, grocery staples, most cold foods including packaged beverages and bakery items, non-alcoholic beverages not prepared on site and seeds and seedlings that produce food. Other EBT/SNAP eligible Millvale businesses include: Yetter’s, 7-Eleven, Family Dollar, and Millvale Quick Stop.

In response to inflated food prices, Giant Eagle revamped its Mobile Market program to accept WIC as an authorized payment. It’s the first retailer of its kind in Pennsylvania to do so.

Launched in January 2022, the on-the-go grocery store is stocked with more than 650 items, including produce, dairy, meat and cheese. It makes weekly stops in eight neighborhoods without convenient access to fresh food, including Braddock and Rankin.
