Homewood Pool Reopens As Part of Park Transformation Project
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the pool on Saturday.
Residents in one Pittsburgh neighborhood now have another way to cool off — just in time for the coming heat wave.
On July 10, City of Pittsburgh officials joined the local community and leaders to celebrate the grand opening of the brand new Homewood Pool, a major feature of the $22.87 million transformation of Homewood Park.
While the pool is officially open, officials say some other Homewood Park amenities will be open to the public in the next few weeks following finishing touches.
Officials add that the project represents one of the city’s largest investments in a neighborhood park in decades.
“We are proud to be celebrating this investment in the vision of the Homewood community,” Mayor Corey O’Connor says in a statement. “Thanks to the leadership and partnership of Homewood Community Sports and the entire Homewood community, we have created an amazing park that will bring children, families and neighbors together for generations to come.”
After identifying that the former park did not meet the modern needs of the neighborhood in 2015, the community-driven master plan reimagined the space to expand, upgrade and reconnect the park to community amenities. The Department of Public Works started construction on the redesigned park in 2023. It includes:
- Relocation of the newly constructed pool and bathhouse/locker rooms
- Regulation-size, natural turf football field with seating and sitewide ADA accessibility
- Field house and concession stand with public restrooms
- Playground and space for various youth and family activities
- Retaining walls surrounding the site
- Dedicated parking lot
- Amphitheater and performance space with partnership with the Afro American Music Institute
- Sitewide stormwater management
- Hamilton Plaza connection to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Homewood
- Connection to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Busway
- Pedestrian Bridge to Westinghouse Park
“Homewood Community Sports is grateful for everyone involved in making this dream come true,” says Mubarik Ismaeli, president of the local youth sports organization and partner in the project. “This project should serve as a symbol of what Black people can do when we work together.”
