Pittsburgh Pet of the Week: General Tso

Meet General Tso, a gentle soul with a big heart.

Pg Mag Pet Of The Month General Tso

Meet General Tso, a gentle soul with a big heart who’s been quietly winning over everyone he meets at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP). Since arriving as a stray in late April 2025, this sweet, easygoing boy has shown just how special he is—and now he’s ready to find the forever home he’s been waiting for.

At approximately 1 year and 8 months old, General Tso has the perfect blend of youthful curiosity and calm companionship. Volunteers rave about his good manners and affectionate nature, describing him as the kind of dog who leans in politely for pets, soaking up attention with a soft, grateful presence. He’s the type of companion who makes you slow down and appreciate the little moments, especially on walks, where he strolls nicely on leash and takes his time sniffing every interesting scent along the way.

General Tso has shown he can be a great social butterfly, too. While at HARP, he’s met other dogs and done well with them, and the team recommends a meet-and-greet with any resident dogs to ensure a good fit. Even more impressive? He recently lived in a foster home with a cat—and loved it. His gentle demeanor and adaptability make him a wonderful candidate for a variety of home environments.

Like many dogs, General Tso isn’t without a few special considerations. He has a hip condition that doesn’t cause him discomfort but does require him to maintain a healthy weight. With regular care, mindful nutrition, and lots of love, he’s expected to continue thriving. HARP’s team is happy to talk through his needs and ensure adopters feel confident and supported.

General Tso is one of HARP’s longer-stay residents, and while he’s been well cared for, there’s no substitute for a true forever home. He’s currently living in a foster home, where his sweet personality continues to shine, proof that shelter dogs, even those who wait a little longer, can make the most devoted companions.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate friend who will happily walk by your side and curl up close when the day is done, General Tso might just be your perfect match. Apply to adopt him through Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh and discover how this gentle boy could add a little extra warmth, and love, to your life.

All animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped, given vaccinations appropriate for their age at the time of adoption, and given flea/tick protection. In addition, dogs 6 months or older are tested for heartworm.
