The Rug Bug’s Back!

Remnant City’s motorized mascot – a fixture on Saw Mill Run Boulevard since 1970 – got a makeover.

Remnant City’s Rug Bug is the vehicular happiness we need right now.

The latest incarnation of the carpeted-on-the-outside Volkswagen Beetle sports an idyllic scene of blue skies, butterflies, rainbows, flowers and a big, yellow sun.

Parked outside of the Carrick business since 1970, the Rug Bug’s donned a variety of get-ups over the decades, including a Twister mat, a Rubik’s Cub, a football, a taxi, a ladybug and a bird. Owner Lisa Talarico, whose parents, Frank and Betty Lou Dorfner, founded the company, has photographs of each adorable ride decorating a wall of the showroom.

For more than 15 years, carpet installer Randy Richardson’s been the driving force behind the Rug Bug’s design. With carpeting, contact cement and a lot of patience, he transforms the humble hatchback into a moveable landmark.

Each day, more than 40,000 vehicles pass by the Rug Bug at 2855 Saw Mill Run Blvd. Yinz can also see it on billboards and commercials and in parades, Touch-A-Truck events and, sadly, gridlock traffic.
