Assistant Director of Strategic Campaigns, United Steelworkers

Sabrina Yow-chyi Liu came to Pittsburgh from Taiwan to study at the University of Pittsburgh.

When she spoke up about something at a workplace, she says an employee used her immigration status to retaliate against her. “I learned firsthand how workplace power imbalance can affect someone’s life,” she says.

She began working for United Steelworkers in 2014. As an extension to her work in fighting for workers’ rights, Liu founded the Pittsburgh chapter of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance in 2018 where she helps Asian and Pacific Islander residents learn about available resources, laws and basic human rights.

In another effort, she helped with a campaign on migrant worker rights in Jordan and also helped document human rights violations in Bangladesh.

In Pittsburgh, she led voter outreach to connect voting with labor issues, such as fair funding for public schools and immigrant worker justice.
