It’s no surprise Lora Sigesmund, owner of PerLora, PerLora Leather and PerLora Loft, has built a successful home-furnishing business. Sigesmund is passionate about the furniture industry, and both she and her husband come from families who owned furniture businesses.

“We travel all over the country and abroad to uncover the best modern and contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories our industry has to offer. Our mission is to provide an unmatched level of service to help our customers create the perfect living environment,” she says. “As you can imagine being a small business owner, I wear many different hats. I do everything from operations, buying merchandise, sales management and marketing.”

Sigesmund believes that building relationships with her customers is important. “In order to thrive as a brick-and-mortar store in this online world, we have to really know our products, make that personal connection and deliver the proper service.”

Sigesmund, 58, admits that running a business with her husband can be “tricky” when they don’t see eye-to-eye, but she finds that their different work styles make them a good team.

“Perry is a visionary, whereas I excel in implementing the details,” says the Pittsburgh native.

Sigesmund, a member of the Women Presidents’ Organization, says an important factor of career development is building professional connections. “It’s important to network with people in the same industry as yourself as well as in other industries. In order to grow and be successful you need to be willing to learn from the people around you.”

Since opening PerLora 23 years ago, the store has received numerous awards, including Junior Achievement’s Start-Up Business of the Year award in 1995 and being named Best Furniture Store by Pittsburgh Magazine and Pittsburgh City Paper.
