For Jennifer Dintini, working in security is both a family tradition and an opportunity to make her own mark. The Plum Borough business owner represents the third generation of a family whose history in the industry began when her grandparents started their first security firm in the late 1970s. After becoming a minority owner of Am-Gard Inc. in 2006, Dintini eventually identified an opportunity to create a 100% woman-owned security firm.

“I would say I am highly accountable, hands-on and determined,” Dintini said. “I am a problem solver and typically a quick decision maker.”

Dintini’s grandparents built their first security business while also holding other jobs — her grandfather at Iron City Brewery in Lawrenceville and her grandmother at Eazor Express in the Strip District. After her grandfather died at a young age, her grandmother and father pursued security full time and founded Am-Gard in 1983. Dintini later saw what she describes as a significant gap for women in the security industry and chose to build a firm providing security guard services.

“I often talk about the challenges being a woman in male-dominated spaces,” she said. “My best advice is believing you can. You hold the power to determine so much of your life and career.”

Dintini takes particular pride in providing employment as well as security. As artificial intelligence and other technologies develop, she believes businesses should continue recognizing the value of people, especially in work where a trained person may be called upon during an emergency.

“Providing jobs to people is what I am most proud of,” she said. “What I do not only provides safety and security for my clients, but it also puts food on the table for families.”

Her community commitments extend beyond her company. Dintini serves on the boards of the Plum Mustang Foundation, Building Owners and Managers Association and Plum Baseball Softball Association, and participates in several other professional and community organizations. Her approach to leadership also reflects advice she has carried with her: “You can’t control others, you can only control yourself. Once you let go of what you can’t control, it’s very empowering.”
