What’s With the Witches on the Water at North Park?

Spectators on the shore loved it but the ducks appeared a bit confused.

It’s not unusual this time of year to see people dressed as witches or other scary creatures. But it’s a rare sight to see them all on paddleboards and kayaks on the same body of water at the same time.

Witches on the Water, sponsored by LLBean employee Nancy Barnes after she saw a similar event in Seattle, was first held on North Park Lake last year. It was such a hit that plans were concocted to make it even bigger and better this year. Unfortunately, the pandemic kept this year’s spooky gathering, held Oct. 17, low key with participants and spectators socially-distant.

In the hopes that things are much closer to normal next October, organizers are planning a much larger event in 2021.
