The Right Way to Wear a Mask
The Allegheny Health Department shared guidelines and steps to take in order to make wearing a mask as effective as possible.
Every day, wearing a mask is becoming more and more normal. We have come to expect to see them when we’re out, but what is the right way to wear one?
On May 13, the Allegheny Health Department posted a live video on its Facebook page addressing many mask-related concerns.
“Masks help stop droplets that contain the coronavirus from spreading and infecting others,” Debra Bogen, Allegheny Health Department director, says.
When wearing a mask . . .
- Only handle masks by strings or loops
- Make sure it covers your mouth and nose
- Use hand sanitizer or wash your hands before taking it on and off
- Store in a safe place, such as a paper bag
- Wash after extended use
“Wearing a mask is important because we know from studies that about half of people who have COVID-19 don’t know they have the virus,” Bogen says.
Masks must be worn when entering businesses, visiting healthcare providers or taking public transportation. Employees who interact with the public must wear masks. Masks do not need to be worn when driving alone in a personal vehicle or with members of your household. However, they should be worn when going through a drive-through.
Masks do not need to be worn outside if you are by yourself or with other family members in your household, but it is encouraged to keep one with you at all times should you need it.
“It’s a small thing, it doesn’t take long to put it on, but it can have a big impact and save lives,” Bogen says.
