Proppin’ Corks by Porchvue Winery Brings Plants and Pinot to Etna
Pittsburgh Plant Co.’s outdoor space features a full bar, fire pits and entertainment.
Look for green thumbs and red wine in Etna.
Proppin’ Corks by Porchvue Winery, Pittsburgh Plant Co.’s outdoor space, is open at 21 Grant Ave. from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday.
Guests will find a full bar selling wine, Pennsylvania-made beer, cider and spirits, signature cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. Enjoy sips by the taster, glass, flight or bottle. The seasonal outdoor space is kid- and dog-friendly with fire pits, string lights, snacks, a rotating lineup of food trucks and live music — with room to grow.
“The whole idea was ‘Let’s turn this underutilized backlot into something really cool that people can enjoy,’” says Craig Slomers, owner of Porchvue Winery in Butler. “If there’s a good turnout, then I think we’ll explore a long-term infrastructure investment to operate 12 months out of the year.”
Pittsburgh Plant Co. owners Madeline Miller and Adrian DeSantis, a married couple also from Butler, opened Grows On Main nearly five years ago at 136 S. Main St. in their hometown, followed by a location at 109 E. Spring St. in Zelienople.
In 2024, the Grows On Main purchased one of its suppliers, rebranded it as Pittsburgh Plant Co. and obtained the Etna property in January to serve as a third location. Customers can peruse a large variety of houseplants, decor and gifts or stop by the Plant Bar to create their own custom arrangement. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, 10 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Sunday.
In the plant world, “propping” is short for propagation, or taking a small cutting of a plant to grow into a whole new one.
The word was a perfect fit for the backyard winery.
Miller and DeSantis’s Butler’s plant shop is located a few blocks from Tannin & Tonic by Porchvue Winery, so the business owners struck up a friendship that led to a professional partnership.
The team went out on a limb to bring vino and vines to Etna.
