Newly Opened Battlegrounds Offers More Than Just Airsoft

The Factory Building on Homestead's Eighth Avenue is the site of tournaments and more.

Open since August, The Battlegrounds in Homestead is a state-of-the-art airsoft course. It's more than a simple, quasi-militaristic plywood battlefield — Battlegrounds offers a unique course, themed around what it calls a “post-invasion neighborhood,” à la "Call of Duty," complete with a police station, sandwich shop, bank, grocery store, tire shop, junk yard, houses and even the remains of a carnival. The team at the Battlegrounds spent months repurposing materials for the course, including used vehicles, in order to give it a unique, realistic feel. All of this is inside an old factory building on the Eighth Avenue in Homestead.

The Battlegrounds doesn’t just stop at airsoft. LAN and Magic the Gathering tournaments are held there weekly, and there also are plans to add laser tag and two cafes in the future. What makes the Battlefield different is not just the activities offered — it's also about the concept of the space itself. Instead of tearing down a building, the owner decided to repurpose it  and breathe new life into the structure.

Events and info are posted online.

#Contests: We’re finalists in the 'Ugliest Accent' tournament

Last week we talked about Gawker’s Ugliest Accent tournament and how Pittsburgh was in the semifinals. Yinz got together and voted, so now we’re in the finals against, of all places, Scranton. Voting will conclude on Monday.

#GoodNews: Kohinoor to reopen soon

After a fire in the kitchen temporarily shuttered Kohinoor, chef Tamilselvan Thangadurai wasn't sure if he was going to be able to reopen the restaurant. Damages to the kitchen are repaired and a new lease negotiated with the building's owner. We're thrilled that the restaurant is back in business and plan on getting our goat curry on this weekend. And we're not the only one's who are excited. "I'm just so thrilled," Thangadurai says. "All I've wanted to do the last few weeks is get back in the kitchen and start cooking."
