Ben Affleck Is ‘The Accountant 2,’ and It’s One Time Too Many
The sequel to the 2016 action flick can’t capture the dumb fun of its predecessor.
I’m not sure how well remembered “The Accountant” is among the general public. I know it’s not particularly well remembered by me — because I had to Google my own review to determine whether or not I had actually seen it.
I found that review. According to my 2016 self, the original film — which starred Ben Affleck as a mild-mannered accountant by day, hired killer by night — was big, dumb fun.
Its belated sequel is missing both the big and the fun.
If anything, “The Accountant 2” is slight and somber. Its nominal plotline involves the murder of one of the characters from the original film and the disappearance of a migrant family; it’s a mystery that promises only further sadness, with no Hollywood ending in the cards.
In what may be an ill-executed attempt to counterbalance the weight of that storyline, most of the film just involves Affleck’s character hanging around. When we first meet him, it’s in a comedic scene at a speed-dating event; he tries to apply analytics to romance, with awkward results. Don’t fret, however; after a heart-to-heart with his estranged brother, he’ll win the affections of a young lady through line dancing.
Again: This is a movie about a disappeared migrant family.
That tonal whiplash is evident both in the script (from “Ozark” creator Bill Dubuque) and the direction. The latter was the domain of Gavin O’Connor, whose total feature output in the past 10 years consists of the two “Accountant” pictures and another Affleck drama, “The Way Back.” (His leading man sure seems to like him, at least.) O’Connor can’t figure out what kind of movie he’s making, so he seems to choose not to decide.
If anything fits, it’s the midtempo blues riffs that score much of the film. Like “The Accountant 2,” they just sort of noodle along.
My Rating: 3/10
“The Accountant 2” is now playing in theaters.
