Know-It-All: The Andy Warhol Bridge
Impress your friends with facts about the yellow suspension bridge, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year.
What could $1.5 million buy you way back in 1926? Why, a self-anchored suspension bridge, that’s what.
Let’s light 100 candles for the Andy Warhol Bridge, which opened on June 17, 1926 in a ceremony attended by 2,000 bridge buffs. It’s the middle sibling of our famed Three Sisters Bridges (sandwiched between the Roberto Clemente Bridge and Rachel Carson Bridge) that cross the Allegheny River.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The bridge’s most recent renovations came in 2016-2017, at a cost of $26 million.
Built by the American Bridge Company to connect Seventh Street from the North Shore to Downtown, the bridge was renamed for Pittsburgh’s native son in 2005 as part of a commemoration of the Andy Warhol Museum’s 10-year anniversary.
It’s a popular spot for proposals and weddings, as the view from any direction is spectacular. Happy birthday!
