Pittsburgh Brewing Takes Over Branding of Landmark South Side Clock

Known as the Duquesne Brewery Clock, it's the largest clock face in the United States.

It’s beer o’clock!

Pittsburgh Brewing Co. is the new face of a local landmark.

The Duquense Brewery Clock, the enormous timepiece that’s towered over the South Side for generations, will soon be a ticking advertisement for Iron City Beer.

Creighton-based Pittsburgh Brewing officially takes over stewardship of the largest clock face in the United States on Aug. 21 at 8:30 p.m. The behemoth got a new coat of red base paint with white lettering.

Velum Fermentation, a microbrewery located directly below the clock, opened in the former Duquesne Brewing bottling facility in April 2023. Cold Friends Kitchen food truck operates outside of the facility Wednesday through Sunday.

At 60 feet across, the Duquesne Brewery Clock is nearly twice the size of London’s Big Ben. Built in the 1930s by the Audichron Company, it was originally located atop Mount Washington, where, early this year, a simple Iron City Beer sign was replaced by an ad for the law firm Pond Lehocky.

The clock was relocated to its current position in 1961. Over the years, it’s sported Duquesne’s “Have a Duke!” slogan, followed by ads for Coca-Cola and AT&T.

It’s been blank for about a decade.
