Allegheny County has created a COVID Field Response Team that will focus on businesses in the community, beginning Thursday.

The 10 team members will check to see that businesses are following safety precautions including masks, occupancy restrictions, and physical distancing. The team will complete a checklist and provide a copy to the business and the public.

The first restaurants and bars to be visited will be ones that have been reported to the health department for non-compliance. The county says it received hundreds of complaints to its website. The team will look for tables spaced far enough apart to allow for physical distancing, indoor occupancy capped at 25%, staff and customers wearing masks, no bar seating and no smoking, dine-in service ending at 11 p.m., and signs reminding customers of the safety precautions.

If a business is in violation of the rules, an inspector from the Food Safety Program will open an investigation that could lead to a business being shut down.

Results of inspections will be available on the Health Department’s website.
