Dig in With Graver: Milane’s Cuban Corner, Glads Deli and Mangia at Live! Casino
You've hit the dining jackpot!
Glads Deli, the Glassport business known for its ridiculously huge hoagies, debuted its second location on March 9; at 9 a.m., there was already a line. Owner Jason Billingsley and his team sold more than 300 sandwiches by closing time at 8 p.m.
I made the drive out to 3535 Route 130 in Irwin to snag a 12-inch American-Italian with cooked ham, turkey, salami, prosciutto, mortadella, hot capicola, provolone, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, salt and pepper, oregano, balsamic, red wine vinaigrette oil and roasted red peppers. I also added a heaping helping of banana peppers so my lunch would tip the scales at approximately 2 pounds.
Hanging in my office at Pittsburgh Magazine is a painting of a sub on Mancini’s bread by Italian artist Fabrizio Gerbino, whose studio is located in a desanctified church across from the McKees Rocks bakery.
I had to eat half of the hoagie to make it fit in this shot of life imitating art.
Milane’s Mobile Goes Brick and Mortar
If you need a taste of the Caribbean to beat the winter blahs, Milane’s Mobile, one of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Best New Restaurants, will debut its stationary space on March 21 on Chartiers Avenue in McKees Rocks.
With the help of Food 21, a nonprofit organization that creates sustainable jobs, economic opportunities and access to nutritional food in local communities, Carlos and Collyn Milanes were able to transform a former Subway sandwich shop into Milane’s Cuban Corner, bringing a little slice of Havana to McKees Rocks Plaza.
The husband-and-wife team will serve their popular Miami-style, Cuban eats along with more traditional offerings from the island nation.
Mangia at Live! Casino
When it comes to Italian dining, I don’t like to gamble, but I think I’ll roll the dice on Mangia.
In April, the fast-casual restaurant and market will open at Live! Casino at Westmoreland Mall in Greensburg. It will feature products from DeLallo, a Jeannette-based Italian foods brand. The fourth-generation, family-owned company started in 1950 as a roadside market; now their products can be found in stores across the country.
Mangia (which means “eat” in Italian) will serve pizza, pasta, hoagies, salads, desserts, craft cocktails, wines and Italian sodas. Patrons will also be able to stock up on DeLallo’s dried pastas, sauces, oils, spreads, meats, cheeses and gift baskets and more; catering will be offered for special occasions.
The Mangia Express window will provide seamless access from the casino floor. For those who don’t want to eat spaghetti while you shoot craps, hand-crafted Illy coffee and espresso drinks will be available. If you don’t hit the jackpot, hit the gelato cart instead for multiple flavors of the frozen dessert.
Other dining options at Live! Casino include Sports & Social Steel City, PBR Pittsburgh and Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar.
