Adda Coffee and Tea Expands to a Second Location

The coffee house brings its international focus and welcoming atmosphere to the North Side.

Adda (ah-dah) is a Bengali word with a double meaning. It’s both the act of friendly conversation between people and the places where people gather for it. Adda Coffee and Tea House has sought to embody that ethos in Shadyside for the last two years. Now, its owners have opened a second location at 926 Western Ave. on the North Side.

The shop is a sweet, bright spot with windows that look out onto Western Avenue. The decorations, in a palate of soft blues and ivories, are calming and clean looking. There are plenty of places to stretch out with a book or a friend. Canine friends also will be welcome on the back patio in the warmer months and the shop plans to host community-based game and craft nights in the backroom.

Adda's Northside manager, Liz Gray, has over six years experience working in the coffee industry. “I learned to love coffee at my first coffee job in Columbus and I learned to respect coffee at Adda,” she says.

Adda uses beans from Verve Coffee Roasters, which sources via direct trade with coffee farmers all over the world. The coffee house employs coffee educator Micah Jasper to help train their staff on how to properly brew the beans.

Gray and owner Sukanta Nag are also planning on taking Adda guests around the world with monthly focuses on different countries and regions, a program that started in the Shadyside location. After a month-long run in Shadyside, the same global focus will move to the North Side shop, where it will run for an additional month. Adda also works in partnership with ceramist Chelsea Erdner of Bombabird Ceramics to create a new mug each month that goes along with the focus country; Erdner also supplies Adda with demitasses for espresso service.

Along with working with local artists, Adda is also purchasing baked goods and snacks from Gluten Free Goat, Pigeon Bagels and Mediterra Bakehouse. Chasen Stark, the chef for both locations, will soon provide small bites and soups to Adda North Side.

Adda Northside soft-opened on Dec. 1 and is currently running daylight hours (until 6 p.m.) with possible plans to add later hours in the future.
