Jenny Lee is heading to the Moon!

OK, Moon Township, but it’s still astronomical news for Pittsburgh. For 150 years, the dainty mascot from McKees Rocks has been synonymous with cinnamon swirl bread and other sweets.

Known as 5 Generation Bakers since 2009, the company is opening its first Jenny Lee Breakfast Nook at 1014 Brodhead Road.

The last day for the building’s current tenant, A Taste of Ita-Lee, is March 15 — and that’s bittersweet. As much as I love a nice, buttered slab of swirl bread, the pepperoni rolls and sandwiches served at this Italian grocery and deli look amazing on social media. And judging from customer comments, they taste just as good, too. I need to blast off to Moon as soon as possible.

When Jenny Lee takes over the joint this June, the menu will feature her signature Swirl and Savory Breads, gourmet grilled cheese, smash burgers, French toast, sticky buns and breakfast “Sammiches.”

I ate a pre-packaged version of the Sammich (think of it as a gourmet yinzer McGriddle) and immediately ate another one. When the double-smash burger on Jenny Lee Parmesan Garlic and Herb Bread drops this summer, I need to be restrained.

“It’s going to be fast-casual with good food and coffee,” explains Scott Baker, owner of 5 Generation Bakers. “We anticipate a lot of take-out orders, but we’ll offer a place where you can sit down and literally break bread with family and friends.”

Baker and his business partners Jack Hunt, Rich Bufalini, Rocco Bufalini and RJ Carrabbia, plan to open more Breakfast Nooks north of the city this year. (If they’re sticking with the space theme, I suggest Mars.)

As for the Moon site, Baker says it’s like coming home. He graduated from Moon High School in 1989 and recalls dining at the building in the ’70s when it housed Pompeo’s restaurant.

He hopes to create new memories in the space for Pittsburghers young and old.

If a Jenny Lee Breakfast Nook could open in my West View neighborhood, that would be out of this world!
