Pittsburgh Steelers Fire Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada
The decision came after Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns, the sixth time the Steelers were unable to score more than one touchdown in a game.
The Matt Canada era is over for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers announced the decision Tuesday morning.
“Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator,” said head coach Mike Tomlin in a statement. “I appreciate Matt’s hard work and dedication, and I wish him the best moving forward in his career.”
According to the Post-Gazette, the decision came after a meeting with team president Art Rooney II.
At his weekly news conference, Tomlin said it was not an easy decision, but it was necessary.
Pittsburgh Steelers Finally Get Around to Blaming Matt Canada
“This is a result-oriented business and, to be short, the improvements were not rapid enough or consistent enough for us to proceed,” Tomlin said. “You’ve got to score touchdowns in this business. You’ve got to win games in this business. The totality of it has us where we are today.”
Fans have called for Canada’s dismissal for months because of an offense that never seems to gain any traction. Compared to the rest of the NFL, the Steelers rank 28th in points per game, 29th in touchdowns, 30th in yards per game and 31st in passing yards per game.
Tomlin said that quarterback coach Mike Sullivan will call the offensive plays on game days. He added that running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will be in charge of “organizing the staff” for the game plan.
