Here Are All the Events Happening This October at The Frick

With the leaves beginning to fall and the hot weather starting to break, spooky season is hiding just around the corner. For October, The Frick Pittsburgh Museum and Gardens in Point Breeze has a list of Halloween-themed events for those with an affinity for all things ghosts and ghouls, as well as some less haunting programming for those who frighten easily. 

For all events, attendees are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance online or at the Visitors Center. All visitors to the Frick also must stop by the Visitors Center to receive a free site admission wristband.

Lunch Pail Lecture: The Women Behind the Walls of the French Nationality Room
Oct. 1 at 12 p.m.
Lunch Pail Lectures is The Frick’s monthly lecture series, where attendees are welcome to bring in their own lunches or order from The Café at the Frick. This month, Joanna Conings, Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pittsburgh, uncovers and discusses the hidden labor and “affective diplomacies” through which women made the French Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh a reality.  Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members and $5 for college students with ID. 

Bal Folk: Live Music & French Social Dance
Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Bal Folk dance, a social folk dance movement from Western Europe, is coming to The Frick’s Community Room. The event will feature live music from Lisa Tamres and Fabien Goulay of Pardon My French! No prior experience is necessary; the evening will include instruction on all the partner, set and chain dances. Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members and $10 for college students with ID.

An Afternoon in Paris: Silent Film with Live Music
Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
Inspired by the French Moderns: Matisse/Renoir/Degas exhibit comes a silent film presentation of Ernst Lubitsch’s stylish 1926 comedy “So This Is Paris.” The silent film will be accompanied by music from Tom Roberts, jazz pianist, composer and music historian. When the film concludes, Chad Hunter, Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival director, will give a Q&A. The film will be screened in The Frick Art Museum Auditorium. Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members and $10 for college students with ID.

Full Day Youth Art Workshop: Nature Art
Oct. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In an all-day, hands-on workshop, students in second through fifth grades will explore The Frick’s collections and campus to create artwork from the outdoors. The event will take place in the Education Center and will be scheduled during Pittsburgh Public Schools in-service days. Tickets are $90 for members and $110 for non-members. 

Walking Tour of the Homewood Cemetery and Frick Pittsburgh Grounds
Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
Visit the resting places of some of Homewood Cemetery’s most notable residents, including the Frick family themselves, in a walking tour led by a Homewood Cemetery historian. After an hour-long walk, grab a spiked cider from the Café at the Frick while learning about death and mourning during the Gilded Age. Attendees should park at The Frick Pittsburgh and meet at the end of the parking lot near Reynolds Street. Tickets are $45 for members, $55 for non-members and $25 for college students with ID.

La Vie Bohème: A Parisian Cabaret
Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
You don’t need a plane ticket to experience the songs, stories and art of the Parisian cabarets. The 90-minute show will include music and cabaret numbers with English translations, a post-performance meet-and-greet and after-hours access to the French Moderns: Matisse/Renoir/Degas exhibit. The event will be held at The Frick Art Museum Auditorium. Tickets are $35 for members, $45 for non-members and $25 for college students with ID. 

Living Collection Series: Fall Foliage Walk
Oct. 14 & 29 at 2 p.m.
Explore the fall foliage with a half-mile guided walk around The Frick grounds. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members and $15 for college students with ID.  

Spooky Spirits Walk
Oct. 15 & 16 at 6 p.m.
Grab a fall beverage (or two) while exploring Pittsburgh’s East End and its haunted history. The 90-minute tour will delve into Pittsburgh’s link to the “crime of the century,” urban legends and the darker side of the East End. The walk, which begins at The Café at the Frick, takes place outdoors, rain or shine, and the tour route is wheelchair accessible. Tickets are $45 for members, $55 for non-members and $25 for college students with ID.

Full Day Youth Art Workshop: Halloween
Oct. 23, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In a full-day, hands-on workshop, students in second through fifth grades will explore The Frick’s collections and make their own mask to wear on Halloween or display at home. The event will take place in the Education Center and will be scheduled during Pittsburgh Public Schools in-service days; participants are welcome to come in costume. Tickets are $90 for members and $110 for non-members. 

Recap Party: HBO’s “The Gilded Age” Season 3
Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.
Discuss your theories, refresh your memory of the major plot points and enjoy a conversation with fellow fans of “The Gilded Age” in the Community Room at The Frick.  While sipping on a specialty cocktail meet the faces and experts behind The Unofficial Gilded Age Aftershow. Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members and $10 for college students with ID.

Living Collection Series: Life Cycle of Trees
Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. & 2 p.m.
To wrap up the October programming at The Frick, take a tour of the grounds and learn about the seasonal cycles trees go through annually and over the course of their lives. The tour, with two time slots available, will last one hour and include half a mile walk. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members and $5 for college students with ID.
