2020 40 Under 40 Honoree: Melissa J. Stein
“It’s really about having a personal relationship with your clients.”
For decades, financial planning and advising have been a man’s world. In fact, only about 20 percent of all financial advisors are female.
It’s ironic, says Melissa Stein, the co-founder of Stein Wealth Advisors, because women make fabulous financial advisors.
“It’s really about having a personal relationship with your clients and helping them meet their financial goals and dreams,” she says.
Stein’s first foray into financial advising was accidental — she took an interview because she figured she could use the practice — but her growth in the business has been intentional.
In 2008, she and her husband left the firm where they worked together to launch their own venture with the stated aim of putting the clients’ needs first. It took months of fielding calls from her condo, files strewn across the floor, before the firm took off.
In 2016, Stein founded POWER of Southpointe, an organization centered around female leadership and mentorship, which she found lacking in the financial realm.
“It really started as a way to fill a need I didn’t have [met],” she says. “There was a craving there.”
