2010 St. Urbans – Hof Ockfen Bockstein Riesling Kabinett

The 2010 St. Urbans - Hof Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett is a beauty, with wonderful tropical fruit aromas and generous flavors of apple and peach.

German wine laws have established several categories of quality. The highest level is designated Qualitätswein mit Prädikat; that label defines wines from a specific district, ones with special attributes that are officially tested and analyzed. The Qualitätswein mit Prädikat class is further divided into five levels, based on the natural sugar level of the grapes at harvest.

Kabinett is the first, and those wines are only made from fully mature grapes. Spätlese wines are made from grapes that are picked after completion of the normal harvest. Auslese is next, and those wines are usually sweeter. The last two levels, Beerenauslese and Trokenbeerenauselese, are very sweet late harvest-style wines.

The 2010 St. Urbans — Hof Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett ($20.99; PLCB code: 24322), a German riesling from the Mosel area, is a beauty, with wonderful tropical fruit aromas and generous flavors of apple and peach; fittingly, I gave it a score of 91. Its finish delivers a nice spice component with balanced acidity.
