Freelance Guidelines

We accept no unsolicited manuscripts. Queries only. If you have an article idea you feel would be right for Pittsburgh Magazine, we'd like to hear from you. All queries must have a logical connection to Pittsburgh.

Print/Photo/Online Rights

Pittsburgh Magazine purchases the following rights for articles:

(a) Exclusive first publication rights for the first 90 days after newsstand date in print and on our website.

(b) The right to refer to the Work and to refer to you as its author together with your relevant biographical data, and to authorize re-publication of all or part of the Work for the advertising and promotion of the Pittsburgh Magazine, as well as the issue of Pittsburgh Magazine in which the work appears.

(c) The non-exclusive right to republish the Work in any anthology or collection of Pittsburgh Magazine material.
 

(d) Exclusive electronic and print rights to publish until ninety days counted from the date of original publication on pittsburghmagazine.com, which shall be determined by Pittsburgh Magazine.


(e) Pittsburgh Magazine can continue to publish the Article on its website and distribute it electronically through an archive, and at its sole discretion.

In the case of any publication of the Article subsequent to publication on the pittsburghmagazine.com, whether in electronic, print or other media, the Author agrees to make a good faith effort to ensure that the Pittsburgh Magazine is appropriately credited as the original source of publication.

Appropriate forms of crediting include written mention of Pittsburgh Magazine’s name and web address (pittsburghmagazine.com)

All copy submitted to Pittsburgh Magazine or its other publications is subject to editing. Copy may be edited for such reasons as accuracy, tone, taste, grammar, magazine style or other concerns; it may be altered and updated following fact-checking. Copy may need to be shortened because of space limitations. The editors have the final decision for making changes, additions or deletions to copy.

Payment
Payments to Pittsburgh Magazine writers, bloggers, photographers and illustrators are mailed at the end of the month of the issue in which the Work appears.

DESPITE ANY OTHER PROVISIONS HEREOF, THIS AGREEMENT SHALL NOT BE DEEMED AN EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT, AND THE PROVISION OF SERVICES BY CONTRACTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT IS TERMINABLE AT WILL.

Intent of the parties



It is the expressed intent of the parties that the Contractor is an independent Contractor and not the agent, employee or servant of Company, and that:

 

(a)    CONTRACTOR SHALL SATISFY ALL TAX AND OTHER GOVERNMENTALLY IMPOSED RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, PAYMENT OF STATE, FEDERAL AND SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES, UNEMPLOYMENT TAXES, WORKERS’ COMPENSATION AND SELF-EMPLOYMENT TAXES.  NO FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL TAXES OF ANY KIND SHALL BE WITHHELD OR PAID BY COMPANY.

(b)    CONTRACTOR IS NOT ENTITLED TO UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS OR WORKERS’ COMPENSATION BENEFITS UNLESS SUCH COVERAGES ARE PROVIDED BY THE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR.
