Wooden, Wearable & Whiskey: 10 Gifts Your Dad Will Love

PittGirl proudly presents her 2015 'Burghy Father's Day Gift Guide.

My father.

He raised five daughters in a three-bedroom house with one bathroom, yet he never had a nervous breakdown. As a minister, he wholeheartedly is devoted to a higher power, yet he firmly believes switching couch positions can swing the momentum of a Steelers game. Slow to yell; quick to leave the room when his team is losing. He’s long-suffering, thrifty to a fault and terrified of deleting anything from his computer or iPad.

Dads. What a fun bunch.

Show the dad in your life you appreciate him for all his oddities this Father’s Day by selecting one or more items from this year’s ’Burghy Father’s Day Gift Guide. “Made in Pittsburgh” shows a lot more love than “made someplace; I dunno.”

1. Studebaker Metals Hand-Forged Mustache Comb ($65 at Studebaker Metals)

Everything about Studebaker Metals twirls my Terrible Towel. The authenticity. The ruggedness. THE PITTSBURGH STAMP. If the dad in your life is sporting one of those trendy full beards or mustaches, then he’ll absolutely love Studebaker’s Hand-Forged Mustache Comb. It’s created from a single piece of American brass, and then each of the comb’s teeth are individually cut … right here in Pittsburgh. And just so dad can be sure of the origin, it has “Pittsburgh” stamped right on it. (Dads of the more clean-shaven variety would love one of Studebaker’s tie clips or key hooks.)

2. Roberto Clemente Museum’s #21 Santurce T-shirt ($30 at the Roberto Clemente Museum or online at Steel City Cotton Works)

It’s a challenge to find a human more worthy of hero-worship than Roberto Clemente, but I bet the dad in your life comes close. If he’s a fan of Pittsburgh’s adopted son, he’ll love the latest shirt from the Roberto Clemente Museum shop. The screen-printed vintage cotton-blend T-shirt pays tribute to Roberto’s stint with his first professional baseball team, the Santurce Cangrejeros (Crabbers) of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

3. Wigle Whiskey 3- or 6-Month “Experimental CSA” ($130, $250 at Wigle Whiskey or online)

There are so many good products available at Pittsburgh’s local organic distillery that I had a hard time picking just one for this year’s list. Grab a gift box of bitters complete with recipe cards, a bottle of organic whiskey or gin — or, my recommendation, go big or go home and purchase a CSA for dear old dad. That’s right. Locally made, small-batch, organic craft spirits delivered right to dad’s door each month for three to six months. I recommend the “Experimental CSA” to give Dad a taste of Wigle’s limited-edition small batch flavors before they sell out, which they usually do. Add a tour of the distillery so Dad can see exactly how his gift is made each month, or throw in some Wigle-branded snifter glasses. My gosh, you’re going to be Dad’s FAVORITE.

4. Alternate Histories Downtown Pittsburgh Romero & Sons 11 x 17 Print ($20 on Etsy or AlternateHistories.com)

This is so subtle, I just had to include it because even a Dad working hard for your tuition money in a corner office can hang this print, and only the keenly observant eye will notice what’s odd about it. This historical image has been slightly altered by the creative local art shop Alternate Histories to include a shoutout to zombie king George Romero. Frame this for the Pittsburgh-loving, zombie-hunting dad in your life. Pitt graduate dads probably would go “ape” for this King Kong/Cathedral of Learning print. See what I did there? Try the veal. (Pair your Alternate Histories gift with their Super Dad card, also made right here in Pittsburgh.)

5. STAK Ceramics Wood-Front Phone Dock ($35 at STAKceramics.com)

When Dad is sitting at the computer at work or home, this clean and simple phone dock — made right here in Pittsburgh — is the perfect multiple-use stand to keep his digital life upright. There’s an opening for the cord, a resting place for his phone of pretty much any shape, brand or size and even a compartment to hold pens, eyeglasses or a small succulent to brighten his day. Order now for a Father’s Day delivery, as each item is made to order. Choose from four different stone finishes.

6. Audra Azoury Steel Town Ballpark or Football Stadium Charm and Ball Chain ($25 per charm, $10 per chain or leather strap at AudraAzoury.com)

Audra Azoury’s Pittsburgh-inspired and -made jewelry isn’t just for women. Her Steel Town charms in the rusty patina finish decidedly are masculine when paired with her ball chains or leather straps. Your sports-loving dad will like the charms that pay tribute to Heinz Field and PNC Park. A subtle way to profess his fandom to two of our city’s professional teams. Another idea: Buy more than one charm and create a custom keyring for dad. Or buy three or four and mount them in a wall frame for his office. I’ma put that on Pinterest.

7. Wendell August Forge Personalized Golf Bag Tag ($15 at Wendell August)

I tried golf once. The end. But if the dad in your life continues to golf no matter how miserable he is at it, he’ll love this personalized aluminum golf bag tag by Wendell August Forge. Get the back engraved with his monogram or a message of love. At only $15, you can pair it with a basket of his favorite golf balls, a new golf towel and a gift certificate to his favorite course. And maybe a flask of strong liquor for when he’s so far in the rough he needs a weedwhacker to find his ball.

8. Fortunes Gourmet Coffee monthly subscription (3-, 6- or 12-months for $39, $69 or $135 at FortunesCoffee.com)

Formerly just wholesale, Fortunes Gourmet Coffee now offers its products to the general public via mail. Fortunes roasts the coffee beans right here in Pittsburgh, and the coffee-loving caffeine-worshipping dad in your life also will worship you for subscribing him to the three-, six- or 12-month coffee subscriptions. Choose the type of bean and dad’s preferred grind texture and then pair with chocolate-covered espresso beans and a personalized mug from local potter Zotter. Or go fancy with a new French Press, but be sure you order the coarse grind to go with it.

9. Fire Pit Wood Works Wooden Growler Carrier ($42.50 on Etsy)

Pittsburgh is the craft beer capital of the world, according to a reputable source*. New small-batch breweries are popping up yearly and your beer-loving dad could use a handy, Pittsburgh-made tote for his beloved growlers. Fire Pit Wood Works offers this carrier designed to fit two of dad’s growlers. You even can have it personalized for a small fee. Dad hasn’t yet experienced the joy of growlers? Get thee to East End Brewing Co. and pick him up a few to pair with the carrier. You’re a good kid.

10. Kerf Case Wood Wallet ($30 at KerfCase.com)

Does the dad in your life have many leather-bound books, and does his office smell of rich mahogany? Even if you said no, he’s going to love this. Kerf is a Pittsburgh-based company that sustainably sources local wood for expertly handcrafted mobile phone cases and wallets. From start to finish, it’s all Pittsburgh. You can choose various woods and stains for iPhones and Galaxy phones, and honestly, good luck making a decision. For a less-expensive gift, check out these wood wallets. Perfect for the dad that doesn’t do the George Costanza thing and walk around with a wallet fatter than a Cap ‘n Egg. This will hold a few cards and his cash quite nicely. And maybe make him smell of rich mahogany. Win-win.
