Women’s Shelter Seeking Meal Donations During Renovations

Last year, the Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh served 6,000 women and children. Now, they need your help.

Due to construction and renovations, the Women’s Center & Shelter has been without an operational kitchen for three weeks.

“While we are thrilled that construction is moving along, we can really use assistance in providing lunch and/or dinner to our residents and their children in May,” Kristin Brown, development director for the shelter says.

The shelter will be ordering food for residents to cover meals when necessary but would appreciate any support to control costs.

Cold food should be donated the day before or the exact day it will be used. Hot food should arrive hot and ready to serve at your scheduled time. The only way the shelter is able to heat food is with a microwave.

Some suggestions for cold food donations are salads (tossed, chicken, pasta, egg, tuna, potato, broccoli, etc.), veggie trays, cheese trays, sandwiches and lunch meat. Hot food examples include pizza, pasta and meatballs, tacos and chicken (parmesan, fried, grilled, etc.). If you prefer to help out by donating gift cards, Giant Eagle, Papa John’s and Pizza Hut gift cards are especially helpful.

If you’re interested in donating meals, here’s what you’ll need to know:

  • Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. and dinner is served at 4:30 p.m.
  • Meal coverage is needed mostly Monday through Friday. If you are only available to help Saturday and Sunday, the shelter suggests donating a gift card to order pizza.
  • Meals should be prepared for all 36 women and children who live at the shelter.
  • The shelter will only accept fresh food, as they have no storage space for canned goods or other storable foods.

Renovations are expected to be completed in the late fall and meal donations for shelter residents and their children are always welcome.

In addition to the emergency shelter, the center offers legal advocacy, a 24-hour hotline, support groups and more to victims of domestic violence and their children. The Women’s Center & Shelter has been a resource in the Pittsburgh community for more than 40 years.

To participate, contact the shelter’s food and resident coordinator, Patty, at 412/687-8017 ext. 307 or tsoukalasp@wcspittsburgh.org with your available dates. The calendar will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
