If your last visit to AHN West Penn Hospital was clean, safe and free of infection, chances are Charlene Humbert El-Amin had something to do with it.
A native of the North Side’s Manchester neighborhood, El-Amin manages approximately 90 housekeeping associates as the Director of Environmental Services at AHN West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield.
An employee of Crothall Healthcare (part of Compass Group), which provides premier healthcare support services nationwide, El-Amin started with the company 17 years ago as a patient ambassador before rising through the ranks as supervisor, assistant director and the resident regional director of operations before taking her current position.
Known as a relationship builder and caretaker who supports and encourages others, El-Amin says she is now looking forward to retirement as she closes out her successful career.
“However, I will always be a mentor to those people looking for guidance and support from me,” she says.
One of her career highlights was working at the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, a center for children and families with special needs. There, El-Amin says she was able to make an impact on those who use the nonprofit’s many resources, which includes early intervention, physical, behavioral and educational services.
“Through seeing the children’s strength and determination, it gave me another level of appreciation for life,” she says.
Other highlights were achieving Crothall’s President Council in 2015. Her team was also honored with the Platinum Plus award in 2021 and again 2023. In 2021, El-Amin also earned the Safety Account of the Year.
An active member of Macedonia Church of Pittsburgh, El-Amin says some of the best career advice she has received along the way is to stay willing — and to stay teachable.
As she gets ready to end this chapter of her career, El-Amin has similar advice for other women moving up the ladder in business.
“You should always stay open minded to new information and guidance,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; stay true to who you are.”
