Patty Thomas had always dreamed of running her own real estate company. In 2002, she made that dream a reality by opening Wellington Real Estate.
Thomas describes the experience as “invigorating and exciting.”
“I was ready,” she says. “It was a ‘real estate high’ for me.”
Wellington represents buyers, builders and developers in the South Hills of Pittsburgh and prides itself on staying a step ahead of competitors by being “well-educated, well-trained and creative.”
In keeping with today’s fast-paced, digital world, Wellington also offers FLASH, a program through which clients receive emails about new listings based on the location, price range and style of home they’re looking for.
With just three full-time employees—two of whom are her adult daughters—Thomas describes Wellington as a “boutique-size” firm. And as both an owner and a broker, Thomas says she does “a little bit of everything” within the company, from sales and negotiations to graphic arts and social media.
Thomas’s 30 years of experience were put to the test when the real estate market crashed in 2008. Despite such heavy industry turmoil, Wellington continued to thrive, quite a feat for a six-year-old company.
Thomas attributes much of this success to the company’s focus on clients.
“The key to Wellington Real Estate's continued success is our ability to truly listen to our clients,” she says.
For aspiring business owners, Thomas recommends they “have a fabulous support system.”
“Most of all, love what you do,” she adds. “There will be days you will have to grin and bear and put a smile on it.”
It’s clear such advice has worked for Thomas.
“Being the Broker of Record for my own company and watching it grow into a successful and profitable venture has been an enjoyable pleasure in my life.”
