Want to Know What Businesses are Open? Check This Map

Allegheny Together created a map to connect small businesses to their customers during the pandemic.

While many businesses in Allegheny County are closed because of Gov. Tom Wolf’s stay-at-home order, dozens of others are allowed to operate because they are considered an essential business or are offering takeout and delivery service.

Taking inspiration from the 2020 Lenten Pittsburgh Fish Fry Map, the new Open for Business Map was born.

“Our team is full of regular fish fry attendees, so inspired by the Pittsburgh Fish Fry Map, we decided to put our resources together and publish a map of businesses that are open,” Rich Overmoyer, CEO of Fourth Economy who helped organize the effort as part of Allegheny Together, told NextPittsburgh.  “We knew that services like Grubhub and DoorDash only cover a sliver of the businesses that are open and struggling to find a foothold in the online marketplace.”

The map works like any other Google map but not every small business is on it … yet.

“It’s going to take a lot of work to get some ‘mom and pop shops’ caught up to the capabilities of e-commerce, and we wanted to give them a leg up by offering a space to show Pittsburghers how they can support local businesses more easily,” says Overmoyer.

Businesses who want to be added to the map just need to fill out this survey. Each listing includes information from addresses to operating hours to delivery options and a link to their websites. The map is updated several times a week.
