Video About Sports in Pittsburgh: It’s Not What You Think

Can a video about sports in Pittsburgh that doesn’t focus on the city’s three major professional teams be an award winner? Absolutely.

Congratulations to VisitPITTSBURGH’s sports development team for winning the 2016 “Marketing Campaign of the Year” Award at this year’s National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium in Sacramento, Calif.

Part of the entry was this video, which judges said “has proven to be authentic, iconic and game-changing by reflecting on [Pittsburgh’s] history while focusing on the future.”

What may be surprising is that while the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins are represented in the video, they are not its primary focus.

Jennifer Hawkins, director of sports development for VisitPITTSBURGH, says the goal of the campaign was to demonstrate that Pittsburgh is more than a legendary and iconic sports town.

“[We wanted to] show how Pittsburgh offers an authentic experience to athletes and fans and communicate why Pittsburgh is the perfect place to crown new champions at your sports event,” she says.
