Looking to update your sleeping space? Get inspired by this bedroom designed by Joann Fullen, owner of Joann Fullen Interiors.
Located inside a 5,000-square-foot addition built onto a Civil War-era home in Ligonier, the inviting master bedroom and en suite bathroom contain all modern amenities while still paying tribute to the home’s historical roots.
Fullen, a past president and board member of the ASID Pennsylvania West Chapter, says she added the wide-plank Carlisle Eastern White Pine floors in the bedroom after researching period-style products. The stained glass in the bathroom (from Rex Glass and Mirror) matches glass in the home’s front door and sidelights, she says.
For historically accurate colors, Fullen consulted a chart from Old-Fashioned Milk Paint, a company that recreates the milk-based paints used before the creation of commercially made paints.
She chose Simplify Beige for the bedroom walls and used Snowbound for the woodwork and built-ins; both colors are from Sherwin Williams. For the bathroom, she custom-created a “faux denim” color using various paints and glazes.
“This is one of those residences I have designed over my 35-year career that I wish I owned the key,” she says. “It is a warm comfortable home [where] I would love to spend time with my family and friends.”

The charming village of Sewickley is renowned across the Pittsburgh area for its beautiful homes (hey, there’s a reason Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby both reside there). And, of course, that means there are some equally beautiful outdoor spaces — and you can explore them.
This weekend, treat yourself to a tour of Sewickley’s finest gardens. The Sewickley Civic Garden Council is hosting the tour, which features six blooming gardens in Edgeworth and Sewickley.
Although the excursion is self guided, a tour brochure provides a map of the homes, plus a description of each garden. For those looking to grab a bite to eat once the tour ends, the guide also has a list of lunch and dinner options in the area.
The tour takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 19 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 20.
