Fans attending the Pitt Panthers’ home opener at Heinz Field on Saturday will notice something new at the concessions stands: beer.
Pitt announced earlier this summer that beer would be sold throughout the stadium. In previous years, alcohol sales had been limited to club and suite areas.
Pitt athletic director Scott Barnes said a year’s worth of studying the issue indicated fans would welcome beer sales, which is estimated to generate $500,000 or more in revenue for Pitt’s athletic department.
“It’s one of a series of initiatives that improves the fan experience,” Barnes told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “That’s one. We certainly won’t hide from the revenue. There’s revenue there.
“I think we’ll get people to the game earlier, I think we’ll get people to stay longer.”
There will be sales restrictions in the student sections. Pitt students who are 21 or older will be able to buy only one beer at a time.
Pitt hosts Villanova on Saturday. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
