Top Tips for Designing a Masculine Room

Do you dream of having your home’s main living area feel complete, furnished with everything warm, cozy and sumptuous? I am currently working on a design project for a client with just this request.

The solution is to create a masculine room – substantial pieces in rugged materials with clean lines. Think large leather sofa, a pair of comfy club chairs and ottoman. No curves, elaborate carvings or delicate fabrics here. Here are some of my top tips on creating a room that looks and feels masculine.

Use Masculine Materials
Using heavy weight natural fibers in a matte finish like cotton, wooly tweed herringbone and leather on upholstered seating gives a masculine vibe. Rugged materials like live-edge wood and metals are perfect choices for tables in the room. A natural sisal or primitive pattern wool rug work well to anchor the sofa, chairs and cocktail table. Exposed brick, natural stone or concrete on a fireplace or wall are surfaces that continue the masculine feel.

Choose Natural Hues
In choosing colors that stay on point with the masculine theme, continue the natural idea with warm, neutral colors in a deep hue. A large comfy leather sofa in a rich color like chocolate brown, creamy caramel or burgundy is a beautiful starting point.

If you want to do a lighter palette of taupes on the upholstered furniture, using a deeper taupe or brown tone for wall color adds richness. For a contemporary style, tables in raw matte wood and pewter toned iron look amazing with deeper charcoal grey leather upholstery or wall color. Wood wainscoting or paneling is enhanced by using a deep wall color above.

Add Final Touches
The masculine room is put together purposefully, with larger statement pieces, eliminating the need to “fill in” with lots of throw pillows and table top accessories. Uncluttered space allows for the display of well-chosen pieces with personality such as trophies, hunting treasures and animal rugs.
