After less than a year in business, The Loveliest Coffee & Clothes is shutting down unexpectedly in Sewickley.

In an emotional video message posted on Instagram this week, shop owner Kathryn Richardson says the owners of the space where The Loveliest is located on Beaver Street had sold the building.

The new building owners have decided not to renew The Loveliest’s lease and are planning to open their own venture in the space, Richardson writes in an accompanying post. “Now, I’m having to say goodbye to my storefront and my dream. I’m feeling angry, super sad, and also have moments of I’ve got this sandwiched with moments of oh crap.”

Fulfilling Richardson’s desire to create the “most Instagrammable spot ever,” The Loveliest opened last May and combined coffee (including latte foam that could be printed with quotes and other art), glittery drinks and women’s clothing.

The ultra-feminine shop, noted for its blush pink walls, hanging basket chairs and flower festooned coffee bar, also was a Best of the Burgh pick by Pittsburgh Magazine’s editorial staff in 2019.

Richardson says she does not have plans to move the business to a new location.

“In May, we poured our hearts and souls into this place, financially and emotionally, and we can’t, at this point, open another one down the street or in Pittsburgh right now,” she says in the video.

On Tuesday, all retail items in the store, including new clothing and accessories arriving for spring, went on sale for 25 percent off.

Richardson, noting the space has become a gathering spot for families, girlfriend meetups and networking events, also asked patrons to stop by the space and share what The Loveliest has meant to them.

“The Loveliest might be going away, but I’m not. I’m here to stay,” she says in the video. “I am here to continue on my journey of building a strong community of women and supporting you and having an amazing network.”
