With their exciting lineup of literary luminaries, Pittsburgh’s premiere lecture series, Ten Evenings, is experiencing a resounding response from area readers delighted to attend events in the historic Carnegie Music Hall after two years of virtual programming.

During the prolonged pandemic, the organization learned, just how much people value the option of viewing from home. “We heard from so many people thanking us for our virtual programming, we realized that this is about so much more than the pandemic, or convenience — it is about accessibility,” says Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures Executive Director, Stephanie Flom. So, once the season begins on September 15, with Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah, lectures will be live-streamed and available to view for one week.

Audience Standing Ovation

The week-long window and ease of viewing have made the lectures available to teachers, who share all or part of the lectures in their classrooms. Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures provides copies of the author’s books to partnering Title 1 schools in the area that teach the book and share the lecture with their students. “It’s an absolute win for us and our students,” says Woodland Hills Librarian Kevin McGuire.

In addition to Abdulrazak Gurnah, the all-star literary lineup includes Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Anthony Doerr with Cloud Cuckoo Land; Clint Smith with his acclaimed work How The Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery across America,  historian Candice Millard with her recent release River Of The Gods, a page-turning account of the search for the source of the Nile; three-time U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, and New Yorker journalist Patrick Radden Keefe with Rogues, stories of grifters, killers, rebels and crooks. The season concludes with bestselling novelist Hanya Yanagihara, author of Little Lives and, more recently, To Paradise.

Flom is delighted to present these distinguished, important authors. “We come together to learn, sometimes to grapple with big questions, and often to laugh—finding joy in the art of well-crafted words and well-told stories.”
