Ten 'Burghy Mother's Day Gift Ideas
My favorite picks for Mother's Day gifts made in Pittsburgh and/or by Pittsburghers. Any of these unique gifts that will show Mom that you put some thought into the gift this year—and never once did a giant bottle of Jean Nate cross your mind.
Having birthed and raised five daughters, you’d think my mother hit the Mother’s Day Super Jackpot while we were growing up. You’d think that five girls and their father would put their six heads together to come up with amazing gifts year after year for the woman who made life worth living by cooking, cleaning, nurturing, loving and dealing with the drama that comes from five girls sharing one bathroom. You’d think Mother’s Day was like Christmas morning if Santa stuffed spa gift certificates, jewelry, shoes and bottles of wine in his bag. You thought wrong.
Instead, I recall giving my mother giant bottles of perfume. Foul smelling perfume.
I recall once sitting in my bedroom with one of my sisters and mixing the remains of three foul smelling perfumes into one all-new-and-improved Essence of Putrescence, and when my mother walked into the room, her eyes immediately tearing up from the sting of Eau de Pew, we exclaimed, "Ta-da! For you!"
I still get a faint phantom headache each time I tell that story.
My father eventually caught on one particularly "chilly" Mother’s Day in which I believe HE gave her a giant bottle of foul smelling perfume, and after that gift-gone-wrong, he started doing a better job of Mother’s Day shopping with five girls and their tiny purses full of Fruit Stripe gum wrappers and coins.
Maybe you need some inspiration this Mother’s Day. Maybe you don’t believe the Oreck people when they tell you that your wife wants a vacuum cleaner for Mother’s Day. Maybe you’re tired of giving her gift certificates to her favorite restaurant. Maybe flowers just aren’t original enough. Maybe the toaster oven is a bad idea. Maybe you’re a mom who wants to "accidentally" forward this post to your children.

Many items for sale on Etsy will be re-listed once sold. Email the seller if an item is sold out. Several of the gifts are available online or at Wildcard in Lawrenceville, a little store I discovered (as did many Pittsburghers), that’s filled with a huge selection of glorious Pittsburgh gifts.
