While getting up in the middle of the night to anchor the morning news on WTAE-TV might be Kelly Frey's career, her passion is caring for her son Bennett, who was born with special needs. A year ago Pittsburgh Magazine documented the renovation of her and husband Jason's West End home into the perfect space for their family.
Along the way, Frey has shared what she has learned with other families in similar situations. Recognizing her many contributions, the non-profit group Zachary's Mission, which supports families of medically-fragile children in the Pittsburgh area, had a surprise for Frey. The group asked her to serve as mistress of ceremonies for its 6th annual fundraising gala on Saturday, Dec. 3. The surprise came at the end of the presentations, when Kelly left the stage to take her seat and this video began to roll.
“I was in shock,” says Frey. “I graciously accepted the award on behalf of everyone who contributes to this incredible foundation. Zachary's Mission has brought together so many people. I am humbled and honored to be a part of it.”
