Sweet Scented Memories: A Visit to the Hills Store for Snacks

Hills Department Stores disappeared from the Pittsburgh area in 1999, but their scent remains in the form of the The Pittsburgh Dad's Hills Snack Bar Candle. According to its producer, Sugar Creek Candle Company in Irwin, it smells like a mix of popcorn, pretzels and Icee Slushes that were sold inside Hills stores back in the 1980s and 1990s.

“It’s one of those warm, fuzzy memories that we love, and apparently there are many other Pittsburghers and people from places all over who loved Hills,” Curt Wootton, aka “Pittsburgh Dad,” told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Wooten is an acquaintance of one of Sugar Creek's founding partners, Anthony Barravecchio. The pair decided to produce and market a scented candle based on a Pittsburgh Dad reference. Their inspiration came from the episode (video below), when Dad goes back in time to visit – among other things – a Hills Department Store.

Barravecchio tells the PG that the Hills candle is quickly becoming one of the company's best sellers.

“We put it out last week and didn’t anticipate anything close to the traction it’s been getting,” Barravecchio said.

He and Wooten are discussing other Pittsburgh-themed candles but aren't ready to share which scents they have in mind just yet.
