Summer Camps Are Back In-Person and It’s Not Too Late to Sign Up

Several local summer camps will have in-person programs starting this week and lasting throughout the summer.

School is out and summer camp is in.

Several local summer camps will have in-person programs starting this week and lasting throughout the summer. It’s not too late to sign up — here are a few places still looking for summer campers. 

PGH Summer Camp

Located at the Oxford Athletic Club, PGH Summer Camp offers a variety of programs centered around sports, the arts and a variety of other group games and activities. Each week has a different theme ranging from the Olympics to Broadway theatre. Weekly sessions begin June 14 and last until Aug. 16. 

Parents will be responsible for taking their child’s temperature before arriving at camp and staff will write it down upon arrival. Campers and staff will be required to follow CDC guidelines regarding masks and activities. To register, visit the camp’s website

Days & time: Mondays through Fridays; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: 100 Village Club Drive, Wexford

Cost: $299/week for members; $349/week for non-members


Carnegie Science Center

The CSC offers a wide variety of educational camps for kids and teens to explore visual coding, engage with 3-D printers and even build pressure rockets. Camps begin June 21 and vary weekly by age group and topic. Three-day camps for those who are autistic or sensory sensitive will also take place starting June 28 and Aug. 16.

All campers and staff will be required to wear a close-fitting multi-layer mask while indoors and while in close contact outdoors. To register, visit Carnegie Science Center’s website.

Days & time: Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: One Allegheny Ave., North Shore

Cost: Starts at $250/week for members and $280 for non-members; varies by camp


Jewish Community Center Performing Arts Camp 

Kids and teens interested in honing their singing, dancing and acting skills can still register for JCC Performing Arts Camp in Squirrel Hill. Campers will learn from professionals in the industry and will participate in theatre games as well as vocal and drama exercises. Campers will develop their musical theatre skills through putting on a production of Aladdin Jr., which family members will be able to attend at the end of camp.

All campers and staff will be required to wear masks, and daily health screenings and temperature checks will be carried out. The camp begins June 21 and occurs every weekday until July 16. To register, visit the camp’s website.

Gaynor’s School of Cooking

Campers at Gaynor’s School of Cooking will learn there are more tasty foods out there other than just hamburgers and pizza. Each week, hands-on camps aim to teach kids and teenagers how to make nutritious foods they can enjoy, such as tomato soup and breakfast berry pizza. Baking camps are also offered and will include making fruit pies, cinnamon buns, and a variety of cakes and frostings. Camps begin June 21 and vary by age and week. Snapology

Snapology, a learning center in Bridgeville, educates kids about STEAM through building tools such as LEGOs and K’Nex and technology. Camps begin June 14 and are offered for single days or full weeks at locations in Bridgeville, Sewickley Academy, Bethel Park Community Center and the Hempfield Township Municipal Building. Programs include bringing animated movies to life with LEGOs and learning about the science behind superheroes’ powers. To register, go here

Point Park Youth and High School Summer Programs

412 Impact

Students will spend two days engaging with the Pittsburgh community by volunteering with nonprofit organizations to complete projects both on and off Point Park University’s campus. In the afternoon, students will develop a video and poster to promote their ideas to help the community. To register, go here.

Days & time: July 28 and 29; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residential Programs

Students interested in expanding their knowledge about a particular field can still join a few of Point Park’s intensive learning programs. Everyone who registers must live on Point Park University’s Campus for the duration of the camp, which lasts one to two weeks depending on the program. Spots remain open for Screenwriting, 2-D Animation and Choreography Collective. To register, visit Point Park’s website

Pittsburgh Center for Arts & Media

Kids looking to express their creative side this summer can register for several camps at the Pittsburgh Center for Arts & Media. Programs are centered around weekly topics ranging from designing board games to exploring the many uses of canvas. 

Campers will have their temperature taken upon arrival and, along with staff, be required to wear masks while on campus. YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer

Kids interested in overnight camps can sign up for Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer. 

Campers will enjoy a variety of outdoor and team-based activities including archery, hiking and capture the flag. This year, the camp will have six one-week sessions and operate at 50% capacity, accommodating only grades 2 through 8 and those in the CIT program. Staff will continue to be recruited and hired until the camp’s first session on June 27. Those interested can register by visiting Camp Kon-O-Kwee’s website

Greentree Sportsplex

Greentree Sportsplex, an 83,000-square-foot indoor sports facility, offers campers activities including dodgeball, flag football and soccer. Each week’s theme, ranging from backyard games to games played around the world, will teach skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship and respect.

Campers, parents and staff will be required to wear masks while in the facility and social distancing will be encouraged through modified games and smaller groups when possible. The camp will run every week from June 14 to Aug. 6, except for the week of July 5. Early drop-off starts at 8 a.m. and is included in the camp fee.
