BECOME A BLACK-FRIDAY CHAMPION WITH I MADE IT! MARKET
Sure, you could get in line for hot deals in the wee hours of the morning on Black Friday . . . scratch that, Thursday morning . . . scratch that, now. But rather than spend part of your holiday weekend huddled in the cold in anticipation of a reasonably priced Wii U (pro tip: you can get one online for pretty much the same price right now), pick up gifts that your loved ones will remember via a trip to I Made It! For the Holidays on Friday and Saturday.
The pop-up market will appear at 623 Smithfield St. downtown from 2-8 p.m. on Friday and 11-5 p.m. on Saturday. More than 80 artists and small businesses will offer their wares, with goodies ranging from apparel and jewelry to home decor and food — and, of course, plenty of one-of-a-kind works of art. While braving the traffic on the busiest shopping day of the year might be hairy, things will get easier on arrival, as parking is free on both days in downtown Parking Authority garages. For more, visit the I Made It! website.
GET THAT THANKSGIVING FEELING AGAIN WITH A TRIP TO NORTH COUNTRY
Sure, we love family, football and fireplaces as much as the next person, but we’re all too eager to admit that our favorite aspect of Thanksgiving is eating until we’re unable to continue. Who says that feeling of semi-gluttonous satiation must be limited to Turkey Day? One of our favorite places to eat and drink until we’re merry and immobile is North Country Brewing, the restaurant and brewery in the heart of Slippery Rock. PM Editorial Intern Jordan Locke puts the northern destination through the Bar Exam in this week’s edition of After Dark!
CELEBRATE BILLY STRAYHORN’S BIRTHDAY IN STYLE
Call it a pre-centennial. Saturday is the 99th anniversary of jazz great Billy Strayhorn’s birth, and the East Liberty theater named for the Pittsburgher is celebrating with Suite Life: A Billy Strayhorn Birthday Bash. Modern jazz master Roger Humphries will lead his band RH Factor, with help from guest vocalist Spanky Wilson, in a headlining set; Carnegie Mellon University brass quintet C Street Brass also will take part in the festivities. Arrive early for a VIP reception featuring hors d'oeuvres, a Champagne toast and additional live performances. Befitting the swanky nature of the event, you’ll need to don your favorite cocktail attire for that part of the evening.
(5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty; Saturday; VIP reception, 6 p.m., concert, 8 p.m.; VIP, $75, general admission, $25; more info here)
IN THEATERS: It’s a holiday weekend, so new releases arrive today. They include comedy sequel “Horrible Bosses 2,” reuniting the team from the original and adding Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine; “The Theory of Everything,” the Stephen Hawking biopic with a lauded lead performance by Eddie Redmayne; and an animated sequel “The Penguins of Madagascar.”
