On Black Friday, a special swarm of shoppers decked out in bright blue shirts will shop ‘til they drop amidst the holiday masses. But these prospective buyers have a different cause than most — to brighten the faces of children who have no home of their own.
Beverly’s Birthdays, a nonprofit organization founded by Megs Yunn in 2012, partners with organizations across the Pittsburgh region to ensure that all children, including those in poverty, have gifts to open on their birthdays. The gifts place special emphasis on learning and education, inspiring such areas as construction, science, engineering and art.
The 25 registered volunteers, also known as the Beverly’s Birthdays Black Friday Birthday Brigade, will hit the stores to scope out the hottest deals for our region’s children in need.
“We ask for receipts to reimburse our shoppers but many of them donate not just their time, but their own money to our cause,” says Yunn. “It’s amazing to see such generosity at a time that’s generally financially tough for most people.”
After Black Friday, the Birthday Brigade will also participate in Shop Local Saturday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday to round up more gifts for deserving local children, guaranteeing that each and every one has a truly happy birthday.
Donations are accepted all year round here.
