Renewing Vows

The Bride, a historic mural on Penn Avenue, gets a beautiful makeover.

For years, commuters have passed The Bride, a colossal mural painted onto a brick building on Penn Avenue. The portrait depicts an African-American woman, draped in a white wedding dress, climbing the stairs to an imagined row house.

Time has been unkind of The Bride, and today the mural is faded and chipped. But thanks to Zandra Specter and the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation, the painting is now receiving a major makeover. StreetView caught up with Ashley Hodder, a local painter and muralist, as she resumed her ambitious touch-ups. The renovation requires Hodder to operate a cherry picker and levitate up to 50 feet in the air.
