The Fox Chapel Area School District is accustomed to being recognized for excellence, so it perhaps isn’t surprising that it was named the top school district in our ranking. The district is made up of six municipalities: Aspinwall, Blawnox, Fox Chapel, Indiana Township, O’Hara Township and Sharpsburg. The total enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year was 4,009 students.
“The Fox Chapel Area School District is very proud to be ranked highest in the category of best schools,” says Superintendent Gene Freeman in an email. “A high ranking such as this one does not happen by chance. It’s due to the hard work and collective efforts of many people, including our school board, faculty and staff, students, administrators, parents, and, most importantly, our students.”
The suburbs’ schools were ranked on a sum of five scores: the number of Advanced Placement courses offered, the SAT math average, the SAT reading average, school district millage rate and whether or not full-day kindergarten is offered.
The Fox Chapel Area School District offers 31 Advanced Placement courses — college-level courses that give high school students experience and the chance to feel what college work is like — the highest of any school district measured.
The average SAT score in the school district is 1,200, putting it in elite territory, and when combined with all-day kindergarten and less than average school district millage, the school district scored highest on our scale.
“A great school district is built on partnerships where everyone works hand-in-hand — all for the benefit of our students,” Freeman says. “I am proud to say that is the kind of environment that exists here in the Fox Chapel Area School District.”
