PPG Paints Unveils New Store Concept at Bakery Square

Forget rushing in and out of the paint store clutching samples or hurriedly deciding on a questionable color choice. At the revamped PPG Paints Bakery Square store in East Liberty, customers are encouraged to hang out and take advantage of the amenities.

“There’s Wi-Fi in the store,” says Dee Schlotter, senior color marketing manager at PPG Paints. “Sometimes painters or designers will want to work from a different space and they’ll meet their clients here.”

The store’s new, user-friendly concept, which was unveiled in late March, was designed with DIYers, architects and interior designers in mind.

As such, long hoteling tables — similar to those found in a Starbucks — that encourage customers to set up their laptops line the front windows. Another table and seating area allows users to browse paint colors at their leisure or to brainstorm ideas.

For those looking for guidance (such as what kind of paint to use on a tin roof, or how to paint wood paneling to make it resemble the trendy white shiplap on HGTV’s “Fixer Upper”), one-on-one color consultations with a PPG color expert are available.

There’s also the modern custom design center, which boasts a bevy of high-tech tools, including — perhaps most entrancingly — a room visualizer.

Here, the PPG THE VOICE OF COLOR® display allows customers to browse by color family or complementary color pairings. Not sure how that color will look on your wall? Let the computer imagine it for you. The display’s digital inspiration screen allows users to colorize rooms and find complementary color pairings.

All the information from the display also is able to be emailed to users, making references back to that color you loved (or thought you loved) easy.

“We’re just creating a space that a little more inviting for the DIY consumer,” Schlotter says.

The Bakery Square location also has expanded hours. It is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

While the design at the Bakery Square retail store is the first of its kind for PPG in the country, it won’t be the last. Schlotter says PPG plans to roll out the concept to more than 250 stores this year.
