Nov. 3/ You’d be hard-pressed to find a stronger punk anomaly than Shonen Knife. The female trio from Osaka has spent the past 35 years crafting songs that eschew typical punk angst for lyrics about food, animals and outer space and a sound that lands somewhere between ’60s girls groups and heavy metal. At their live shows, it’s never more evident that the cult favorites care much less about genre labels than they do about having fun. Nov. 14/ Folk and Americana have seen a rise in popularity in the last few years, much of which has been aesthetic. Think suspenders, superfluous banjos and other trappings that a friend refers to as “antebellum curious.” The challenge for serious contemporary country and folk artists is to project authenticity rather than affectation. Mount Moriah and special guest Jake Xerxes Fussell approach this in different ways. For Fussell, it’s about submerging himself in the history of the South and its music and infusing his work with it (his self-titled debut album is a collection of 10 re-imagined folk and blues songs). Mount Moriah is interested in puzzling out what it means to be a contemporary progressive Southerner, dealing with questions of faith, sexuality and identity in a place that already has such a strong identity of its own.
