Pittsburgh's Can't Miss Concerts in January

This month's lineup includes Lauryn Hill, Matt Lorenz and Steve Gunn.

Jan. 31/ Nearly 20 years after its release, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” remains one of the most lauded R&B albums of all time. With her new tour, The MLH Caravan: A Diaspora Calling!, Hill promises much of what made her only solo studio album such an enduring success: a poetic balance of the political and the intensely personal set against her distinct blend of neo-soul, hip-hop and reggae. Jan. 14/ Matt Lorenz, the force behind the one-man folk pop band The Suitcase Junket, may initially come off as an old-timey peddler. He tours with a weathered guitar and a percussion kit that includes a gas can, a saw and assorted silverware. But his deft mastery of his ramshackle setup, along with his rich and raspy voice and some occasional throat singing, helps him overcome what might otherwise seem gimmicky and gives him a sound that is resonant, complex and satisfying. Jan. 19/ The Jan. 19 edition of The Warhol’s Sound Series is a celebration of the guitar, featuring two highly skilled axemen: Brooklynite Steve Gunn (pictured), who has spent the last 10 years morphing into a confident front-man, and Lee Ranaldo, best known as one of the founding members of noise-rock legends Sonic Youth. Both will play solo sets in the museum’s entrance, a space extraordinarily conducive to focusing on the technical mastery of two accomplished musicians.
