Dec. 8/ No December is complete without a classic holiday party. The charm of the twinkling lights, the way the mulled wine warms your cheeks, the skill it takes to avoid ending up beneath the mistletoe with that one person (you know who). WYEP’s annual Holiday Hootenanny is here for all of your festive desires. This year’s party will feature an opening set from DJ Selecta followed by holiday favorites from more than 20 local musicians. Join the party for a night of winter revelry, a classic Pittsburgh Cookie Table, and the opportunity to indulge in the spirit of holiday generosity — guests are encouraged to bring gift cards to donate to veterans through the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania. (Stage AE, 400 North Shore Drive, North Shore; 412/381-9131, wyep.org)

Dec. 7/ Matt Pond PA always has been a band concerned with the passing of time. The group’s newest album, “Winter Lives,” joins an oeuvre that includes multiple songs and entire records that take their names and inspirations from the seasons. It’s a natural choice for a band whose evocative, prose-like lyrics and introspective indie-rock sound create moments that feel steeped in rich imagery and nostalgia. Catch the band at Club Cafe on its short East Coast tour. (56-58 S. 12th St., South Side; 412/431-4950, clubcafelive.com)

Dec. 11/ If you’re in the mood for something a little less sugar-spun than the typical cheer of the holiday season, Shana Falana might be just the thing. It’s shoegazing dream pop, but the sort in which your dreams are ragged at the edges, as though the Ghost of Christmas Past is whispering in one ear about old anxieties as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is in the other, beckoning you forward into an exciting unknown. And all the while the Ghost of Christmas Present is rocking out. (Spirit Lodge, 242 51st St., Lawrenceville; 412/586-4441, spiritpgh.com)
