Pittsburghers – Do You Need a Digital Detox?

Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel is now offering a package where guests must literally unplug from technology.

It’s a night away from it all — so why not really get away from it all?

That’s the idea behind the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel’s new “Digital Detox Package.” When you check in, you surrender all electronic devices — laptop, tablet, iPod, even (gasp) your phone. If that’s not enough to make you shudder — there’s not even a TV in the room.

Instead, the Downtown hotel provides board games, playing cards and literary classics, as well as vouchers for relaxing activities such as kayaking or biking, all for the price of a one-night stay in a Deluxe King Riverview room.

“It makes our guests realize just how much valuable time they waste focusing on their devices instead of each other,” says Craig Bollman, Renaissance director of sales and marketing, in a press release.

If you want to explore the city during your stay, the hotel also provides an instant camera rental.

Devices are securely stored and returned to guests when they check out.

“While being unplugged created a bit of stress, the freedom of not feeling compelled to check email, texts and social media has enabled some guests to realize just how much they rely on technology rather than interacting with those around them and enjoying downtime, which is something we all need,” Bollman says.

To celebrate the new package, the hotel is offering a chance to win a Digital Detox Package. To nominate someone for the prize, submit a story on the hotel’s website about why the person desperately need a break from technology. Nominations will be accepted until May 15.
