#Social: Two locals riff on Humans of New York concept, get 5,000 Likes

Just like Brandon Stanton, founder of the Humans of New York Facebook page, Sarah Thornton and Anish Kumar started their project with a camera in hand and a few questions in mind.

“We want to showcase the diversity of the city,” says Thornton, referring to their Humans of Pitt page. “There’s just these throngs of people, and each one has such complex backstory that’s really easy to overlook.”

Last spring, the rising University of Pittsburgh juniors ventured to Schenley Park on a whim to shoot prospective profiles and launch their vision. Thus began a colorful collection of profiles, celebrating an assortment of Pittsburghers. From an opera singer sporting a mohawk to a young father of two, each post contains a candid portrait. Things have taken off — the page now has more than 5,000 Likes.

As the anonymous profiles grew more personal, so too did the responses. Kumar recalled an early quote from a man whom he thought encapsulated the message of the page. The profile read: "There is no such thing as a simple person."

“Every human has layers that tell their substory,” Kumar says. “One of the biggest things I’ve learned about this is that people have a lot that they want to share, but they don't have a place to share it.”
