Meet Our Judges
To ensure fairness and neutrality, a panel of Cleveland-based professionals in the design and architecture industries handled this year’s judging process.
With more than 25 years experience, Stephen M. Schill of Schill Architecture, LLC, is a preeminent architect in northeast Ohio.
Schill’s residential projects have a strong influence from his studies of architecture at Villa Schifanoia in Florence, Italy, where he developed his understanding of scale, proportion and details.
Since Schill Architecture was established in 1991, Schill has designed luxury multimillion-dollar lakefront and estate homes throughout northern Ohio. His work has been featured in several regional publications.
A graduate of Miami University and Kent State University,
Stephanie Schill Hayden is a registered architect at Schill Architecture and a designer at House of L Interior Design.
While she has known she wanted to be an architect in the family business since she was a girl, she appreciates the opportunity to work collectively on shared projects between both luxury residential firms.
By completing both the architectural and interior drawings for residential projects, Schill Hayden can ensure the design intent is followed through from the foundation to the millwork details.
Jodi van der Wiel is an associate design director in the award-winning Cleveland firm Vocon.
Her studio focuses on residential, commercial, educational and wellness projects.
Throughout her tenure, van der Wiel has earned a reputation for creating thoughtful, site-specific solutions influenced by her understanding of constructibility, sustainability and detailing. She serves as First Vice-President for AIA Cleveland and is a member of the Cleveland Downtown Flats Design Review Committee.
A project designer at Vocon, Crystal DeCastro Knapik has seven years of design and project management experience with residential, healthcare, corporate office, retail and development projects.
She began her career in architecture at the University of California in Berkeley, then continued to Ohio State University for her master’s in architecture.
Her diverse project experience enables her to design solutions that balance many perspectives and create functional and enjoyable environments. In the last 10 years, she has bounced around the country, spending time in Oakland, Columbus and St. Louis before settling in Cleveland.
