Chef Kevin Sousa has waited a long time to open Superior Motors. So have the more than 2,000 investors who contributed $310,225 to his kickstarter campaign to convert a former Chevrolet dealership in Braddock into a restaurant. Finally, the long-awaited project has an opening date set for next month.

Sousa says the restaurant will open July 12, following an invitation-only soft opening the previous weekend.

When Pittsburgh Magazine first profiled the project in March 2015, Sousa foresaw “a friendly destination restaurant intended to attract diners from throughout the region as well as the neighborhood, a place where steelworkers from across the street and symphony lovers from Point Breeze will mingle.” At the time, Sousa predicted the restaurant would open later that year.

It would be another two years before final funding was obtained to offset unforeseen construction costs.

“I was going to play every card until the end,” Sousa tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “And we’re actually coming back stronger. It’s a much better project because of the delay.”
